Ear tubes (aka "grommets") – seems like a lot of children getting them, but how necessary are they and how well do they work in preventing future ear infections? By 3 years old, 70% of all children have experienced at least one ear infection. After all, an ear infection is the most common reason for visits to a pediatric doctor's office. Yet, the insertion of ear tubes treats the symptoms of ear infections, and not its cause. Nonetheless, more than 500,000 children receive this ear surgery each year, making it the most common procedure conducted under general anesthesia for children. The most non invasive and natural approach to fixing the cause of ear infections is to help the inner ear drain fluid and boost the immune system of a child. In babies and young children, the angle of the inner ear is not yet tilting down-and-out of the ear. So fluids tend to drift back into the ear. When this fluid remains in the inner ear, the child is at risk of developing an infection. Not only does a chiropractic adjustment help with boosting the immune system (which helps to prevent an infection in the first place), it can help with the drainage the inner ear of a child by aligning the vertebrae in the upper neck. Chiropractors aren't "treating" the ear infection, per se, but are finding and eliminating the "cause" of the ear infections, and supporting the body in it's natural functions of being vibrantly resilient to dys-functions, infections and dys-eases. See you soon, Dr. Lizie The Role of Antioxidants in Good Health Everyone has heard about the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining good health. Similarly, everyone knows that they should be getting exercise - or at the very least adding more activity into their days. Getting a good night's sleep is essential - without it, you'll find that your immune system starts to slack off a bit and you put yourself at a greater risk for catching a cold or coming down with the flu. All About Vitamin A. You may have heard from your grandma that eating carrots can improve you vision. That may not be exactly true, but carrots do contain something called provitamin A carotenoids. These are pigments in some plants that can be converted by the body into vitamin A, and vitamin A is important to your vision. Vitamin A is also helpful to bone growth and your immune system. As with other vitamins, there are different forms of vitamin A. One of the forms that is most usable to the body is called retinol, which is found in liver, eggs, and milk. One of the most common provitamin A carotenoids that the body converts easily to retinol is beta carotene. Beta carotene is found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables including carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and cantaloupe. Vitamin A is also one of the vitamins often used to fortify breakfast cereals. "Can Vitamin A lower the risk of some forms of cancer?" Most people are aware that diet and exercise are key components of preventing heart disease, however less people are aware that chiropractic treatment is effectively used as a tool to prevent heart disease. Research reveals that certain chiropractic procedures help to improve the function and overall heart health. Research also shows that adjustments to the spine lower blood pressure in individuals suffering from hypertension and provide a better heart rate. We may both agree health is our greatest asset, but how is it measured? How do we truly know if we're healthy or not? When asked the simple question "How do you know if you’re healthy?" most will answer "You're healthy if you feel good." Some may even base health on how they look. A fitness or health model may lead you to assume, "That’s what a healthy person looks like." Yikes! While looking and feeling healthy have some merit, by basing your health solely on looks and feel, the ginormous problem is that you’ll never think or do anything about your health until you feel or look bad. Sound the alarm! With that approach you might become a part of the statistics. Yuck - no one wants that! Welp, you may be surprised to learn that the top 3 leading killers in the U.S. are actually caused by things you don't feel and don’t see – until it’s too late. Check this out… The 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. is heart disease. This unfortunate disease kills over 550,000 people a year. 80% of the time the first symptom of heart disease is a heart attack, and 50% of those heart attacks end in death. If you wait until you feel heart disease it could be too late! The 2nd leading cause of death in the U.S. is cancer. This devastating disease kills over 800,000 people a year. Most people with cancer don't have a noticeable symptom until their cancer is in the last stage. If you wait until that point to start improving your health, it could be too late! Can you guess the #1 leading cause of death in the U.S.? It’s hidden in the fine print. According to a study by Gary Null Ph.D. (and many other reputable physicians) published in Time Magazine, the leading cause of death is medical malpractice and prescription drug reactions, killing nearly 1,000,000 people a year. Yes, one million. Ouch! “They also believe the numbers are actually much higher because most iatrogenic deaths aren’t reported as such: only 5 to 20% of iatrogenic deaths are reported for fear of lawsuits and because codes for reporting deaths due to drug side effects and other medical errors don’t even exist in many cases. The number of deaths due to conventional medicine may be 20 times higher than the numbers depicted here.” ~ Dr. Axe In a society that bases their health on how they look and feel it’s no surprise really. Do you think: "If a drug covers up my symptom (like aches, pain, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol), and I don't feel it any more, I must be healthy." Is that really healthy? The short answer is "No." AWaiting until you have a symptom, and then masking it with a drug, is the number one cause of death in this country. So, what is health? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as: "…the optimal functioning of the body, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually, but not merely the absence of sickness or disease." As you see, health is not merely how you look or feel; it’s how you function! What controls the function of your body? Yes, you got it – "Your nervous system!" Precisely why we always start with function first when addressing any health issue. Yes, food is important. And fitness, too. Yet if the one thing controlling every function of your body is off, you’ll never achieve health. The chiropractic adjustment removes interference in your nervous system and allows your body to function at it's best. So every time you get adjusted in our office, it’s not just "spending time" or "money." You are INVESTING in YOUR LIFE. You are improving your health, creating a legacy, and changing your family tree! Ready to invest in your health? Call our office at 978-846-1964. See you soon! Best in health, “The Death by Medicine doctors also took a look at unnecessary medical care over the course of a decade. They found that 89 million people are hospitalized unnecessarily each year and that 17 million iatrogenic events will occur among this number. 75 million Americans receive unnecessary medical procedures over a decade, 15 million of which result in an iatrogenic event. 164 million people will receive unneeded medical treatment within a decade.” ~ Dr. Axe |
