Surgery or Chiropractic for Chronic Sciatica Sufferers?

Pain coming from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve is called sciatica. Sciatica – which can include pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness – is really a symptom indicating an underlying problem, not a diagnosis in and of itself. This article will explore in detail the findings of a recent controlled study comparing spinal manipulation (chiropractic) and surgery for people whose sciatica did not respond to traditional medical treatment approaches.

WHAT IS HEALTH?

2/7/2017

We may both agree health is our greatest asset, but how is it measured?

How do we truly know if we're healthy or not?
When asked the simple question "How do you know if you’re healthy?" most will answer "You're healthy if you feel good." Some may even base health on how they look. A fitness or health model may lead you to assume, "That’s what a healthy person looks like." Yikes!

While looking and feeling healthy have some merit, by basing your health solely on looks and feel, the ginormous problem is that you’ll never think or do anything about your health until you feel or look bad.  Sound the alarm!

With that approach you might become a part of the statistics. Yuck - no one wants that!  Welp, you may be surprised to learn that the top 3 leading killers in the U.S. are actually caused by things you don't feel and don’t see – until it’s too late.  Check this out…

The 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. is heart disease. This unfortunate disease kills over 550,000 people a year. 80% of the time the first symptom of heart disease is a heart attack, and 50% of those heart attacks end in death. If you wait until you feel heart disease it could be too late!

The 2nd leading cause of death in the U.S. is cancer. This devastating disease kills over 800,000 people a year. Most people with cancer don't have a noticeable symptom until their cancer is in the last stage. If you wait until that point to start improving your health, it could be too late!

Can you guess the #1 leading cause of death in the U.S.? It’s hidden in the fine print. According to a study by Gary Null Ph.D. (and many other reputable physicians) published in Time Magazine, the leading cause of death is medical malpractice and prescription drug reactions, killing nearly 1,000,000 people a year. Yes, one million. Ouch!
“They also believe the numbers are actually much higher because most iatrogenic deaths aren’t reported as such: only 5 to 20% of iatrogenic deaths are reported for fear of lawsuits and because codes for reporting deaths due to drug side effects and other medical errors don’t even exist in many cases. The number of deaths due to conventional medicine may be 20 times higher than the numbers depicted here.”    ~ Dr. Axe
In a society that bases their health on how they look and feel it’s no surprise really. Do you think: "If a drug covers up my symptom (like aches, pain, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol), and I don't feel it any more, I must be healthy."

Is that really healthy? The short answer is "No."
AWaiting until you have a symptom, and then masking it with a drug, is the number one cause of death in this country.

So, what is health?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as:
"…the optimal functioning of the body, mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually, but not merely the absence of sickness or disease."

As you see, health is not merely how you look or feel; it’s how you function!

What controls the function of your body?
Yes, you got it – "Your nervous system!" Precisely why we always start with function first when addressing any health issue.

Yes, food is important.
And fitness, too.

Yet if the one thing controlling every function of your body is off, you’ll never achieve health. The chiropractic adjustment removes interference in your nervous system and allows your body to function at it's best.

So every time you get adjusted in our office, it’s not just "spending time" or "money." You are INVESTING in YOUR LIFE. You are improving your health, creating a legacy, and changing your family tree!

Ready to invest in your health? Call our office at 978-846-1964.  See you soon!

Best in health,
Functional Health

“The Death by Medicine doctors also took a look at unnecessary medical care over the course of a decade. They found that 89 million people are hospitalized unnecessarily each year and that 17 million iatrogenic events will occur among this number. 75 million Americans receive unnecessary medical procedures over a decade, 15 million of which result in an iatrogenic event. 164 million people will receive unneeded medical treatment within a decade.” ~ Dr. Axe

Taking Flexibility Training Seriously...
When it comes to the Big Three of exercise - cardiovascular, strength training and flexibility - it's pretty clear which one can get overlooked. After all, while we prize cardiovascular and strength training for their role in helping us lose weight, build muscle and get fit, the benefits of flexibility training are less immediately alluring.

More on effective flexibility training to include into your workout routine...

Do ADHD Medications have side effects?

12/8/2016

A recent investigation conducted by The Star, a newspaper in Canada, unearthed information about 600 children who had serious, sometimes fatal, side effects of drugs used for the symptoms associated with ADD and ADHD. Each of these children went to the hospital, suffered a disability or life-threatening condition, or died.
The investigators also discovered that ADHD drugs Strattera and Concerta were “the second- and third-highest suspected causes of reported serious side effects suffered by Canadian kids taking any drug in the past 10 years.” According to The Star, this was worse than any cancer drug, any antipsychotic drug for kids with serious mental illness, and “more than nearly 1,800 other drugs reported to have been the suspected cause of a serious side effect in a Canadian child since 2001.”
They also found that “in more than 40 per cent of all cases where a youth thought about suicide, an ADHD drug is listed as the suspected cause.”
Here are some examples of the side effects that were reported:
- 20 kids became psychotic
- 40 kids were depressed
- 24 had convulsions
- 48 had hallucinations, including 11 cases of kids hearing voices (aka ‘auditory hallucinations’)- 20 overdoses, eight of those intentional
- 3 had strokes
- 28 had heart problems, including heart attacks
- 23 cases of liver damage
- some also experienced amnesia, mania, cerebral hemorrhage, suicide ideation and suicide attempts, both successful and unsuccessful.
Two hundred of the reports were from the last two years, and some of the children were as young as 4 years old.
Also, it is widely acknowledged that this type of incident is grossly under-reported. How many of these things are actually going on is anyone’s guess, but some experts believe the number of events being reported to be about 5 percent of what’s actually happening.
ADD and ADHD are not diseases, they are diagnoses given to sets of symptoms. Many of the symptoms can be caused by actual physical conditions such as allergies, toxicities, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and so on. However, when a child exhibits the symptoms, they are likely to be put on the drugs without a thorough investigation of their physical condition. The drugs do not cure or even address the root cause of the problem.
The symptoms can also be caused by a number of other situations in the child’s home, school or social life.
If your child has the symptoms of ADD or ADHD, have them checked in our office to thoroughly investigate these problems and find the cause of the symptoms, rather than simply treating them with dangerous drugs.

3 Fun Holiday Recipes with Essential Oils

12/21/2015

Picture
Around the holidays, it's always fun to mix-in new recipes instead of the same old stuff. This year I started to add essential oils into my diet... Baking & cooking with essential oils? Yep, you heard it: a world where each drop is filled with delicious, vibrant taste. An art I've only just begun to dabble in, we're excited to share with you a few "naughty" recipes to treat your guests for the holidays. Enjoy! I'm always looking for new and exciting EO recipes - please share your favorite EO recipe in the comments.

1. Peppermint Truffle

   INGREDIENTS
  • 1 pack (12 oz.) Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (Sunspire)
  • 1/2 cup Organic Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (Sunspire)
  • 1 cup Organic Valley brand Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 5 TBSP Organic Valley brand Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter softened
  • 5-15 drops of your choice of Young Living Essential Oil – choose Lavender, Orange, or Peppermint (the amount of essential oil adjusted to your taste preferences)
*** Peppermint is very strong… consider using a drop of YL peppermint oil and adjust accordingly.
  • 1/4 cup Organic Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Organic Cocoa Powder
Picture
   DIRECTIONS
  1. Combine both bags of chocolate chips in a medium sized mixing bowl and set aside.
  2. Heat the whipping cream to a strong simmer.  Pour over the chocolate chips. Let stand for a few minutes so chips will soften and melt.  Stir until smooth.
  3. In a small bowl, whip butter, sugar, and your desired choice of Young Living Essential Oil. *Start by using 5 drops of essential oil.  You can always add more if you want a stronger flavor. *the oil you choose will determine the amount of drops needed.
  4. Now pour your small bowl of butter, sugar and essential oil into the chocolate chip mixture. Use either an electric hand mixer or whisk manually, until smooth and creamy. Taste to see if you want to add more essential oil.
  5. Put bowl in fridge for at least an hour. Remove once its firm.
  6. Once firm, scoop out the chocolate by using a melon ball scooper. Roll into 1 inch balls using your hands. Place chocolate balls on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.
  7. Roll each chocolate ball into cocoa powder or simply shake it on with a sifter.
  8. Can also drizzle with more melted chocolate and coat with toasted coconut, finely ground nuts, orange zest, etc.

 3. Fudgy “Thin” Mint Brownies

DIRECTIONS
Simply add 8-10 drops of YL Peppermint Essential Oil to your favorite brownie recipe or box mix! These are SO delicious!!

Can You Just Use Any Essential Oils?
No - is the short answer. Not all essential oils are created equal. I've tried a few different brands. I’ve done a bunch of research on various essential oils and the one particular brand that sticks out head-and-shoulders above the rest is Young Living Essential Oils.

NOTE:  You can NOT cook with any essential oil!  Most essential oils are not therapeutic grade, thus are not for internal use. They are cosmetic/fragrant oils.  Please do not cook with your essential oil unless you're using  Young Living or food grade safe EO's!
*We do not advocate the use of any other brand of essential oils in food preparation as they are generally aromatherapy grade and are typically labeled with precautions against using them in any other fashion.

Hey, what's your favorite essential oil recipe? Please share in the comments... I'm always looking for fun ways to use my oils. Happy Holidays!
