What is healthy metabolism? Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) vs. Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)10/10/2024
Metabolism, it is very important, but, we may need to re-think things.....
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) This is the amount of energy your body uses while at rest. ---- verses --- Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) This is how much different tissues and organs use of the BMR while at rest. Can you guess which organs and tissues use or burn the most energy? Conventional fitness/medical wisdom of the day tells us that our BMR is driven by our muscle mass and muscle activity, saying that the more muscle mass you have and the more it is active then the more it raises your metabolism. HOWEVER, REE studies tell us a very different story. According to studies of Resting Energy Expenditure...
See an issue with this? I do. Where is muscle in all of this? Muscle is supposed to drive our metabolism, right? Well, muscle uses less than 1% of your Resting Energy Expenditure. Muscle energy use is 1/35th of what your heart uses, or your kidneys. Fat is less than that. This makes me realize that I need to really look closer at how well and efficiently my organs are working. This also makes me see why fat seems to be such a more effective fuel for the body than sugar. Cellular level repair, organ function and structure, and pure energy out-put is much better with fat compared to sugar. Sugar also is what drives visceral fat, liver fat, oxidative stress, inflammation, pancreatic and other organ fat, and is the primary driver of insulin which stiffens and damages blood vessels and heart arteries effecting function of the heart. Muscle is tremendously important for may reasons. One is that healthy, well-trained muscle can hold 2,000% more glycogen (sugar stores) than sedentary muscle. This helps keep extra sugar out of the blood and helps keep oxidative stress low. Muscle contraction also promotes better circulation, lymph drainage and health, as well as heat and energy levels. I have much to teach about this, so if you're interested in a healthy metabolism reset, let me know and I'll send you a guide. Here's to fixing metabolism issues by keeping our organs happy and healthy... and to looking and feeling your best!
